Americanism Committee<\/h3>\r\n

The purpose of the Americanism program is to promote patriotism and responsible citizenship. The Americanism work of the ALA includes all activities that strengthen American ideals and uphold the principles of democracy. The security of America lies in\u00a0citizens who have a true understanding, love for those ideals, and principles upon which\u00a0the nation was founded, and a willingness to perform these duties even at great\u00a0personal sacrifice. The work of the Americanism program is educationally based and divided into three phases: work with youth, work with adults, and work with the\u00a0community. All matters about the flag or patriotic education are classified as\u00a0Americanism activities. Every citizen should have a thorough knowledge and\u00a0understanding of the Constitution of the United States. Therefore, the ALA has a very\u00a0definite goal in emphasizing the teachings of good citizenship.<\/p>\r\n

Activities that fall under Americanism:<\/b>

\u2022<\/span> Displaying the U.S. Flag, observing proper etiquette
\u2022<\/span> Providing Flag Etiquette education
\u2022<\/span> Sponsoring the Americanism Essay Contests and presentation of Americanism Essay awards in schools; this year\u2019s essay title is \u201cHow can you be a beacon of\u00a0light for our veterans?\u201d For the 2026-2027 essay rules, go to https:\/\/www.legiona<\/span>ux.org\/Member\/Committees\/Americanism\/Get-Involved-Americanism<\/a>
\u2022<\/span> Presentation of U.S. flags to schools and encouraging the Pledge of Allegiance\u00a0be recited daily\u00a0
\u2022<\/span> Promote www.legion.org\/flag<\/span><\/a> and flag advocacy
\u2022<\/span> Observe patriotic holidays
o<\/span> Virginia is one of three states that has in its state code the Freedom Flag <\/i>of Remembrance of 9\/11<\/i>. This may be displayed on September 11th\u00a0<\/span>National Day of Service (formerly known as Patriot Day), and throughout\u00a0the remainder of the month.
\u2022<\/span> Being an informed voter.
\u2022<\/span> Promotion of Star Spangled Kids<\/i> programs
\u2022<\/span> Sponsoring citizenship classes

Cooperative Effort in the American Legion Family<\/b><\/p>\r\n

ALA members can effectively make patriotism a personal matter and select and successfully carry out projects adaptable to the needs of their communities. Work as an American Legion Family to promote these activities at home, in schools, and throughout your communities. Support American Legion Baseball<\/i>, the Oratorical Contest<\/i>, and\u00a0Junior Shooting Sports<\/i>.<\/p>\r\n

Recognize local business who display the U.S. Flag, whether daily or on patriotic\u00a0holidays.\u00a0Join the ALA Americanism Facebook group and check the National ALA website\u00a0frequently for updates.<\/p>\r\n
