Outstanding Virginian

OUTSTANDING VIRGINIAN COMMITTEE

The Outstanding Virginian Committee’s purpose is to formally recognize a Virginian who emulates the motto of the American Legion Auxiliary, “Service, Not Self”.

Award Rules:

  1. The nominee should be someone who is a truly Outstanding Virginian. It is to be awarded at the Department Convention in July.
  2. The nominee must be a resident of Virginia, but not necessarily a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
  3. The nominee should be one who is well-known on a statewide basis. The nominee must be highly respected in their field of endeavor and as a citizen.
  4. A nominee MUST NOT KNOW that the nomination is being made.

  5. Nominations should be in the form of a resume recounting the nominee’s activities that exemplify “Service Not Self” along with letters of recommendation for the award.
    Nominations with resumes and letters of recommendation should be sent to the Outstanding Virginian Committee Chair. Nominations are due by April 1, 2026.
  6. All nominations will be reviewed by the committee and forwarded for consideration by the Department President and the Department President’s Advisory Committee.
  7. The Department President will invite the recipient to attend the Department Convention o receive the award.
